The course is aimed at educators in primary care who are involved in teaching at the university or practice level. We expect that both experienced teachers and those at the beginning of their educational careers will find the course useful.

Rationale

With the neo-renaissance of family medicine, we have seen a reaffirmation of the core values of our discipline. One of these values is patient-cantered care. An important aspect of this is respect for patient autonomy. Kerr White taught us half a century ago, later confirmed by the research of Larry Green, that most care in the community is self-care. We have witnessed the importance of self-care during the pandemic. We need to explore this further in order to understand how patients care for their own needs and how to promote this in those who don’t. Self-care has implications for the health of the patient and the doctor, the well-being of communities, and the sustainable use of limited resources. This course for teachers of family medicine at all levels will allow participants to understand the many aspects of self-care and consider how we can teach this to our students, trainees, and colleagues.
